1. Snowbird
Snowbird has terrain to suit everyone, but it’s an excellent resort for advanced skiers. Steep slopes and open bowls are challenging but not overwhelming. It is also one of the most scenic ski resorts in Utah, with sharp mountain peaks that make you feel like you’re in the mountains.
Snowbird is adjacent to Alta Ski Resort, and the two can be skied together with a joint ticket. They are connected at the top of Sugarloaf Pass, and together they have enough land to keep you busy indefinitely. These resorts tend to receive large amounts of snow from storms that channel into Cottonwood Valley.
Unique among Utah resorts, Snowbird has a 125-passenger Trolley, giving access to almost all mountain areas via an elevator. It also has a tunnel through the mountain, which skiers can move along on a conveyor belt that serves as a “ski-through” mining museum.

Snowbird recently invested $35 million to upgrade and improve its facilities. One of the significant improvements was the addition of The Summit Restaurant at the top of Hidden Peak, with views of the rolling foothills and spectacular mountains of Little Cottonwood Canyon. They also expanded the iconic Cliff Lodge.
New for 2020/21 are renovations to the Snowbird Center, with new public areas and a new outdoor patio at The Forklift restaurant. Skier movement has also been improved with two new pedestrian bridges, one of which is 491 feet long.
Snowbird’s base is fundamental with some lodging options, but there’s no real town or village to speak of, so it’s more of a ski mountain than a social mountain. There is usually ample parking at the base, lots further away are free, and lots closer to you charge a small fee. 2. Deer Valley
Deer Valley is a ski experience like no other in Utah, with world-class facilities, a good mix of terrain for all levels of skiers, great snowmaking capacity, and a staff that goes above and beyond to make sure your ski experience is fun. This ski-only resort is just two miles down the road from downtown Park City and about 45 minutes from Salt Lake City.
Though primarily known as a family resort, the mountain has a surprisingly varied terrain that will keep even the most advanced skiers busy. More than 100 trails are spread across 2,000 acres and six mountains, with long and wide groomers for families on Flagstaff, Bald and Empire Mountains, and rugged glade adventures on Lady Morgan Mountain. The slopes here are well laid out with good drop lines.
To ensure the best skiing experience and minimal lift lines, Deer Valley limits the number of skiers to 7,500 per day, which means that during peak vacation times, the mountain is never too crowded to enjoy. Lodging options in Deer Valley move toward the luxury end of the scale, with hotels and condominiums with direct access to the ski slopes. Park City Mountain Resort is one of the largest ski resorts in Utah, now second to Powder Mountain. Dating back to 1938, this historic, old-school, ski-only resort sits at the end of Little Cottonwood Valley and captures more than 500 inches, nearly 42 feet, of snow a year. The terrain here is varied, with groomed trails and plenty of areas for new skiers, but overall the mountain is skewed toward strong intermediates and explorers who like to ski groomed trails.
The resort has six main lifts (others only service the cabins) that access more than 2,000 skiable acres. There are two bases: the main base is Wildcat, where there is ample parking and facilities for skiers, and Albion, a little further up the canyon, where the ski school is located, but parking is relatively limited. The Wildcat Base and Collins Lift are recommended for the quickest access to most of the terrain.
Alta is just up the valley from Snowbird, and those seeking additional terrain can access Snowbird Mountain through a gate at the top of Sugarloaf Pass by purchasing a combo lift ticket. A good option when conditions are icy is to ski Alta in the morning and then switch to the Snowbird Mineral Basin bowl to catch the afternoon light and sun-softened conditions. A double mountain pass is also a good option in the spring when not all tracks are open at any resorts.

Alta’s facilities and restaurants tend to be relatively basic, though the newer Watson Café is a step up from the crowd.
Alta is a good destination for day trips from Salt Lake City. You’ll also find three fantastic terrain parks, Little cat, Blue Grouse and Orson’s, geared towards boarders and freestylers of varying abilities.
