At 10,761 feet above sea level, Chirripó is Costa Rica’s tallest mountain. Its name means “land of eternal waters,” referring to the abundance of lakes and streams around the mountain. You can climb it by obtaining a permit from the Chirripó National Park office in San Gerardo de Rivas. From the start of the official trail, it’s a 12.1-mile hike to the top.

The trek takes over 5,000 feet of vertical drop, so expect a challenge (and across multiple ecosystems – the páramos, or treeless plateaus, are unique and can only be found at high elevations in the tropics. They are everywhere, but the ones in Plaza Víquez in San José (Saturday) and Avenida Central and Calle 1 in Santa Ana (Sunday) are particularly plentiful. Vendors set up at 6 a.m., and by 1 p.m., the product will be picked up and the crowds gone.

All of the items available for purchase are locally sourced, so the money is flowing back into the community in one way another. Here, perhaps more than anywhere else, you can feel the local culture. Most people you will see browsing the wares are Ticos, who buy fresh groceries for their restaurants or family meals.

Playa Pacuare covers a 4.4-mile long coastal strip of sand, but more impressive than its size are its seasonal visitors: the leatherback turtle, hawksbill (loggerhead) turtle, and green sea turtles. The turtle nesting season is between March and October, depending on the species. If you visit the place at the right time, you may be able to see hundreds of mother turtles emerging from the Caribbean to lay their eggs or, later, baby turtles hatching and making their way to the water.
