Don’t be intimidated by The Little Nell’s legendary reputation. All are treated kindly here, and while the iconic Element 47 fine-dining restaurant and bar is the perfect base for passionate adults, Ajax is the fun sibling always up for a party. This indoor/outdoor restaurant at the foot of the Silver Queen Gondola is always crowded regardless of the season, but it’s as much about the food and drink as the stage.
You can’t go wrong with the raw sea bass, the dreamy chicken liver pate or the salads, but we also love the tasty burger. That cosy hole in the wall (one of Curbed Ski’s best cross-country ski bakeries) on Hyman Avenue Mall is a local secret that even many locals don’t know about. However, those who know how to arrive early to fix the daily specials for breakfast or lunch (Thursday doughnuts are crazy). Sandwiches and daily specials (meatballs, porchetta or juicy brisket, pissaladière soups, salads…) Did we mention that all the bread is homemade and the bagels are the real deal? For more than 25 years, Chris Lanter and Jodi Larner’s chic little French spot has remained one of Aspen’s finest dining establishments. It’s no small feat, and former chef de cuisine and current chef de cuisine Nathan King is killing it by maintaining his reputation. While rotisserie chicken gets a lot of press, there’s a lot to love about the intense seasonal menu (Lanter owns a small farm in Paonia and King is a dedicated gatherer). Do you want some wine? Related to the Aspen dining scene, Grey Lady is a New England-style seafood restaurant, which opened in December 2014 and is the sibling to the famous Manhattan bar/eatery of the same name. The cosy, 70-seat venue packs them in, thanks to stellar food and cocktails, a friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a subtly sexy and rustic-chic interior. Co-owner Ryan Chadwick’s uncle is a Maine lobster fisherman and ships his catch every day, piggybacking on oysters from a Damariscotta mariculture farm. In addition to a full bar, there are four signature large-batch libations on tap, including a Moscow Mule with House Escobar vodka made by Woody Creek Distillers of Basalt.

Since opening a few summers ago, HOPS Culture has been… jumping. Aspen’s long-awaited “craft beer-centric restaurant” on Hyman Ave. The pedestrian mall is the place to go when you’re craving a cold one. With 30 beers on tap and 200 a bottle (including limited releases and everything from duels to rye), 15 wines, and 12 craft spirits (Moscow Mules are the one-of-a-kind house and come in six different variations),,, it’s easy.
See why beer fans flock here. The food is simple and exclusive to the pub: salads, half rotisserie chicken, “melt,” and variations of mac and cheese. The ground-floor bar space is industrial, but the 11-bank beer garden on the central strip of the park-like mall has already established itself as the place to be on a summer’s day.

Since 1889, This men’s bar has been one of Aspen’s most prominent social venues (during Prohibition, it served “Aspen Crud,” a spiked shake that is still on the menu). It’s still a favourite with the local crowd and celebrities, but the scene is laid-back, and the decor is all about the Old West. Don’t miss the ornate carved rear bar, Chippendale Chinoiserie bar, patterned roof, and intricate crown moulding. We come for lunch to enjoy the best burger in town: a juicy, stacked beauty with all sides, the hearty salads (Caesar kale, barbecue chicken …) and main dishes like the famous spinach and artichoke sauce. Ski bums and late-night revellers alike would surely perish without this Aspen institution. What’s not to love about delicious, honkin’ big slices served till 2:30 am? For a “cheap” meal, order up a pie and a pitcher, but things get hopping when the bars close. You may wait in line for 20 minutes or more, but that hot, cheesy, sobering slice or four is so worth it (bonus: this stuff tastes just as great sober, which is the ultimate litmus test).

Executive Chef, Julia Domingos and her husband / GM Allen have created charming and inspiring lunch menus from 11: 30-2: 30 that changes every Tuesday. Espresso has already gained a cult following in a city where lousy coffee is everywhere, but the food also deserves the endorsement.
There’s panini, salads, a kid’s plate, house cakes, beer, wine by the glass … all in an ultra-modern white space accented by glass beams, concrete, and blond cross-hatched ceilings. The courtyard and nearly 360-degree views of downtown Aspen and Ajax don’t hurt, but what’s remarkable is the lack of crowds and the resulting serenity.

This ever-leaping little Victorian from East Hopkins has made a name for himself with the stacked chicken sandwich, burgers and monstrous salads. The menu, although succinct, covers all the basics:
